Can resveratrol really prevent diabetes?
We have probably gotten used to getting great news about resveratrol, but this does not mean that we should stop paying attention. As scientists claim, there is really a great number of different health issues that this substance can potentially help us cure or prevent. Various studies are being carried out and there are two, which are almost completed, about the effects this substance has on diabetes.
Whether or not resveratrol can really prevent this condition was a question that was often on scientist`s minds. As the substance is able to make a tremendous impact on weight loss, it seems sensible to think that it might have the ability to prevent diabetes as well, as the condition is, most often, caused by obesity. Of course, genetics is responsible to a certain degree, but being obese is what actually triggers it.
Fortunately, the studies have proved that resveratrol is powerful in this case. The people who were tested were all on a high-fat diet, which usually leads to significant weight gain and subsequently to cardiovascular problems and diabetes. The subjects were divided into two groups, where one group was treated with certain doses of resveratrol and the other one with a placebo.
The results are astonishing. The substance proved to be extremely useful when it comes to insulin sensitivity. Type 2 diabetes is a consequence of the body`s insulin resistance, which is generally treated with medications. The fact that resveratrol is of great help can mean that medications will not be necessary.
Clinically speaking, oxidative stress is what triggers insulin resistance and this is what needs to be prevented. In order to avoid getting diabetes, the level of this harmful oxidative stress has to be reduced and this is exactly what resveratrol is able to do.
How this will develop is not yet known, but it will be unfortunate if further research on the subject is not planned. It is believed that taking resveratrol dietary supplements and eating foods that are rich in this substance can reduce the risk of suffering from diabetes. Since there are no side effects, this could be the best course of action when prevention is in question, especially if someone in your family is suffering from this condition.
