Exciting new study shows that resveratrol can help battle malaria
Malaria used to be a deadly disease because people did not know how to treat it. Nowadays, the situation is not quite alarming as the disease can be treated successfully in most cases, but unfortunately, there are still almost one million people who die because of it.
Malaria is caused by a parasite that enters the body via a mosquito bite. However, this type of parasite can only exist in tropical, humid areas, most commonly in Africa. The parasite reaches the liver where it infects red blood cells. If nothing is done to get rid of the parasite, it multiplies and infects more and more cells until your body becomes incapable of performing its function. Depending on the severeness of the disease, the treatments involve either the usage of oral drugs, or the parenteral administration of drugs which is recommended to severe cases of malaria.
In order to make the treatments more efficient, scientists have explored the effect resveratrol might have on malaria. Some may think that scientists jumped to conclusions when they thought that this compound might have any kind of effect on malaria, however, considering all the health-promoting properties of the compound, it seems quite sensible that there is something about resveratrol that can make it helpful when it comes to treating malaria.
As it turns out, resveratrol can be used as a part of treatment. The parasite usually attaches to small blood vessels and damages red blood cells. Resveratrol makes the parasite incapable of attaching to the vessels and thus protects them, which, in turn, prevents the disease from progressing.
Of course, resveratrol cannot be used as a treatment, but it seems that it can be combined with other anti-malarial drugs, which could potentially
fasten the recovery. Those that took part in this study strongly believe in this compound, but as they say, more studies need to be carried out in order to fully understand the whole thing.
The best thing that can come out of this is that pharmaceutical companies use resveratrol to find a way to produce inexpensive drugs, which could become available to poor people in Africa currently fighting malaria.
