Resveratrol and Alzheimer`s disease
Resveratrol and Alzheimer`s disease
The list of resveratrol beneficial effects goes on and on. The effects that this substance has on our body such as cancer prevention, the prevention of heart related diseases, the ability to help with weight loss and delay the process of aging are the ones that are often talked about and there are many articles which explain how the substance is able to do all that. However, Alzheimer`s disease is not frequently discussed, which is rather unfortunate because this powerful substance makes a tremendous impact on this disease as well.
Alzheimer`s is a type of dementia that usually affects people who are over 65 years old although the symptoms such as inability to memorize new information or to remember certain things or even parts of your life can present themselves at an earlier age of life. The disease is terminal because as it progresses, people tend to forget more and more until they reach the phase when they are unable to swallow or breathe. Sounds unbelievable, but unfortunately, it happens.
The exact cause is not known and there are theories according to which there are many possible triggers. One of them, which is discussed most often, has something to do with amyloid beta deposits. When the amount of these peptides increases, the risk of suffering from Alzheimer`s is quite high. This is supported by numerous studies carried out on humans already affected by this disease.
The answer to finding the cure will thus be closely connected to finding something that will actually decrease the amount of these harmful peptides. There have been studies on whether or not resveratrol can make a difference when it comes to this issue. It has been proved that resveratrol, when added to the cells which produce amyloid beta, reduces the number of these potentially harmful peptides.
It seems reasonable to think that anything with the ability to affect the amounts of these peptides should be regarded as a possible cure. Since resveratrol makes a tremendous effect on this, it could become the main ingredient of future drugs used for treating Alzheimer`s.
The only problem is that grape juice and red wine cannot really provide you with enough amounts of resveratrol that are needed for preventing this disease. However, resveratrol dietary supplements can definitely do so.
